Spirit Quilt Paintings

Overwhelmed at how I’ve seen the Holy Spirit sewing things together - unbound by space or time.

How does He remind me of the exact verse I need just when I need it? How does He place a card or note from years ago in the place we need it today? How has my grandmother’s life become a part of my creative process? How has her suffering over years affected me, our family today?

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1 1:17

These paintings are pieces and places and times in life the Holy Spirit has somehow perfectly sewn together. Not in a way we would have planned. Maybe not even a way we understand.

A sick loved one, an unexpected change, crushing disappointment, a broken relationship…What is the purpose in all these hard things?

“And we know that in ALL THINGS God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Every detail, even the number of hairs on our heads are on counted, placed on purpose.

“And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Matthew 10:30

So there is purpose in pain, in suffering, in Alzheimers. And the Holy Spirit sews it all together, stitch by stitch.

As I painted the layers of landscapes and then all the pieces around them, my colors became cloth, pieces of quilts just like my grandmother sewed. I began to see something important from the layer before and painted the perfect contrast next to it, to enhance it, to make it important.

Some parts I left for variety, others for texture, some just for the beautiful color they became layered on top of another. What piece of life is the Holy Spirit sewing into us now? Pieces from layers of paint over time come together in my “Spirit Quilts.”
