“By wisdom a house is built,
    and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
    with rare and beautiful treasures.”

-Proverbs 24:3-4

As I prayed these verses and started to paint, I saw all the pieces of a house coming together.  Not just the physical parts, but the “rare and beautiful treasures” that we read about in Proverbs 24.

I love some things about my physical house, while others I dream of changing. To have a play room I can see from the kitchen, a wider front porch with a porch swing we could all fit on, a screened in porch… The Lord stopped me here - what would be different if all the spaces were as I wanted? Would I be a better cook? Would the kids always listen? Would the house miraculously stay cleaner?!

No, the rare and beautiful treasures are not the perfect spaces or porch swing. The real treasures God gives us through wisdom, understanding and knowledge is the time we spend in the house. It’s in the rhythms & habits; the dinners shared around a table, snuggles on the couch and all the bed time stories and questions.

These paintings illustrate the way God slowly builds our spiritual house, in layers and colors over a life time.   As seasons change, He moves things around to meet our needs, perfectly according to His good and perfect plan.  And slowly, our “Rooms are Filled” with real treasures.
